This was an emotional day. A museum of pictures, the room in which Gandhi lived, had his last fast. It was surrounded with French doors that could be opened so he could easily talk with large groups of visitors. Photos of his last meeting, which went longer than planned. he was late for the 5:00 prayer he led each evening, forcing his assailants to change their plan. The last walk he took from his room to where the prayer took place has footsteps. Tears overtook us as we felt the emotion from January 30, 1948 when he breathed his last.
There is a large mural that tells the story of Gandhi's life and death. It is directly behind where he say to offer prayers each evening, and is also in the location of two of the assailants who were ready with hand grenades.
The National Gandhi Museum within the house he lived was very thorough and full of new information, pictures of Gandhi, and newspaper articles, and actual artifacts from that time. I found it very interesting.
This room had his blood stained clothes, one of the bullets that killed him, the urns that held his ashes and the carrier that held the ashes on the train to the river, etc. Below is the closer up.
Tushar explaining about Henri Carter Bresson, a journalist who was there during the assassination and wrote a powerful article with details.
The blanket below was made for Arun's mom and dad as a wedding gift by Mahatma and his wife, Kasturba. Ba and Bapu were how they were called by family.Below was a gift from the Dahli Lama to this site in honor of Gandhi and in hopes for a peaceful world. I am sorry we as a human species are using violence so much to express displeasure or disagreement. May we choose peace.
Thank you Liz! We are learning along with you! xo
